The Town of Field, British Columbia

The town of Field, British Columbia

Nestled at the foot of Mount Stephen, the village of Field lies in the heart of Yoho National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) on the banks of the Kicking Horse River. Offering breathtaking mountain scenery, plentiful wildlife, exceptional accommodations, and world-class outdoor recreation, the townsite of Field, British Columbia is the cozy alternative for those seeking small-town charm and big-time adventure in the heights of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Field was established during the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway as a locomotive depot for pusher engines required to help trains over the nearby Field Hill. The town was given its name by the CPR in December 1884 to honour American businessman Cyrus West Field, who was instrumental in establishing trans-atlantic telegraph service. Despite the CPR's best efforts to win an investment from Cyrus Field, by naming the village and Mount Field in his honour, he never did invest.

It is home to 300 inhabitants, The Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation and numerous small B&B’s, hotels and guesthouses as well as eating establishments, gifts and a general store. The community is also home to many artisans who’s works can be found in the village. Visit www.field.ca for more information.
